Most domestic water purifiers use technologies which are either unable to supply safe water for drinking ,or are basically industrial process scaled down in size for domestic use.

The first category, with greater awareness among consumers ,does not find much favour any longer. The most popular in this category,the UV lamp technology, inactivates bacteria and a few viruses in controlled conditions.But its effectiveness against RNA viruses is debatable.Even complete bacterial disinfection by UV lamp is suspect as even a single unharmed bacterium can proliferate in the downstream piping.Also,the consumer is exposed to the health risks of drinking water containing dead or inactivated bacteria.As UV lamp is completely ineffective against contaminants like fluorides,arsenic etc.people are looking for dependable options which can provide safe water to them.

It is here that the second category, purifiers using primarily industrial techniques,confuses the consumer.

Reverse Osmosis,or RO,the most popular of these, not only depends on electric power,but also results in about 70% wastage of feed water.The idea of throwing three glasses of water to drink one glass is scary,considering that water availability in most areas is already scarce.This is also contrary to our basic common sensical frugality,and our respect and senibility for water and its preservation (rather than thoughtless wastefulness).

Another problem with using RO based systems in areas having low to moderate TDS in water is,that all essential minerals are removed from water , making the water unpalatable.For the harassed customer it is a case of "lose taste and have waste".
