India, along with China , is the largest consumer of water in the world.( USA comes at number three)But as per the per capita consumption figures, it is a country of water scarcity. And, though some countries are still able to provide good quality water to their citizens, most countries, and typically developing countries, are unable to do so.
Why?
With increase in population ,and improper utilization of water , water table is going down drastically.
This is coupled with two other issues:
1. Extremely dangerous industrial effluents are being discarded without proper treatment.
2. Excessive and indiscriminate use of herbicides, pesticides and chemical fertilizers mix with rainwater and make water unfit for consumption.
Yet another problem, typical of developing countries,is, that a huge population lives without proper sanitation facilities and so human (and animal) excrement is one of the largest water pollutant.
Raw sewage is dumped into water supplies and often this fouled water is used without any treatment for drinking and other purposes.
When we add to these issues the condition of water and sewage pipelines, it seems that the only way to deal with the issue is to avoid thinking about it. Which is what is done most of the times.
The Consequence.
Deaths, due to easily preventable water borne diseases , are counted in lacks every year.
The number of people who fall ill and carry consequent problems all their lives is much bigger.
What is required to be done is simple:
1. Have proper sanitation facilities for everybody.
2. Repair all sewage and water supply lines.
3. Ensure proper treatment of all industrial wastes before disposal.
4. Prevent indiscriminate use of harmful pesticides, herbicides fertilizers etc.
5. Have effective water treatment plants to ensure supply of only completely treated water.
But the simple is not always easy .
As a result we end up getting water which is not fit for consumption. So we have to help ourselves by point-of-use filtration .
Domestic water purifiers have now become essential to protect ourselves and our families (the children, old people , and pregnant women are even more susceptible to water borne diseases due to lower resistance) from pathogens reaching us through the water that we drink.
The reason most people do not ensure their family's safety by installing a water- purifier, even while being aware about the dangers of consuming untreated water, varies from high initial- and- running cost, to dependence on trained service personnel for proper functioning of water purifiers, to irregular availability of electric power required for using the purifiers.
That was pre- Dolphin UF.
There is no excuse now.
